Fashion innovators are really up to what people find new and fresh and intresting to the fashion scene. That being said my favorite fashion innovator as of recent and in my opinion is Madamoiselle Yulia of Tokyo, Japan. Mademoiselle Yulia has been a musical and stylistic innovator in Japan for years and her international reputation in my opinion is growing every day, especially with her recent collaboration with fashion designer Jeremy Scott for Adidas Originals (High Snobette, 2012). Madamosielle Yulia has an impressive resume as a Japanese DJ and musician, associated with the Tokyo electro scene & she has even worked & performed with the likes of M.I.A., Justice, Steve Aoki and Will.i.am of the Black Eyed Peas. Outside of music, she also writes as a columnist in the fashion magazine Nylon the Japanese edition. Besides being a well known trendsetter in Tokyo in music and fashion she was also featured on CNN international’s “The Tokyo Hot List of 2010”: 20 people to watch of the top talents in Japan, Yulia placed in second of twenty people to watch in the entertainment scene ( Marx, D. W., Poole, R. M., & Janette, M., 2010).

In terms of fashion Madamoiselle Yulia is no stranger to it in terms of her own eclectic fashion sense, she is very popular amongst the Japanese street fashion scene and often sports unique brands like KTZ, Gerlan Jeans and Jeremy Scott as well as local Japanese brands. Madamoiselle Yulia also happens to run her own accessories line by the name of GIZA. GIZA specializes in jewelry and other accessories with an ancient Egypt theme it was started in the spring of 2008. The brand’s concept is to make accessories that challenge fashion conventions and don’t conform to any one style (Tokyo Fashion, 2010).  She states that she is also influenced and  inspired by rockabilly and that as Yulia was  in Tokyo one day shopping she stated to herself “…I was walking around shops looking for jewelry, and decided I needed to do my own.”(Vice Style, 2010) and thus GIZA was born. She began by making accessories that she would like to wear and eventually her line grew and she started doing jewelry pieces with an ancient Egyptian influence and pieces that were blinged out in various finishes .Yulia is all about creating edgy accessories that are fun to wear and also spiritual, but she also enjoys making  cute styles that are fun and quirky, not the typical jewelry you can find anywhere. She finds pride in creating eye catching and alluring designs and is all all about unique statement pieces.

Accessories made by Giza include jewelry, bags, headwear, badges and even t-shirts.  Because the brand is inspired by the mystery and grandeur of ancient Egypt there is jewelry that  includes earrings and necklaces with ancient Egyptian designs and “pyramid” rings (rings shaped like the famous pyramids of Egypt).  One of their most popular items is the Giza t-shirt, a plain black or white shirt with the Giza logo printed on it.

Her endeavors in fashion have led her into collaborating with exclusive Los Angeles based brand JOYRICH for their Spring/Summer 2011 collection and as well as their most recent Spring/Summer 2012 collection. Her collections as featured  throughout this blog post are full of bright colors ,unique prints and designs as well as colorful graphic prints, prints like a cartoon dinosaur motif, that adorns the biker jackets, shorts, vests and pants throughout the 2011 collection and  the JOYRICH x GIZA signature wrench motif  which was also prominently placed on several of the pieces from her Spring/Summer 2011 designs. Her Spring/Summer 2012 collection featured  brighter colors and bursts of fresh colorful geometric prints, designs that stand out  that are bold and electic pieces that are hard to miss.

Yulia is still in her early 20’s and has become an icon in the Tokyo fashion scene, known for her successful brand GIZA in Japan as well as her musical work and her very unique personal style. I really feel that Mademoiselle Yulia is a fashion innovator with her unconventional designs, fresh perspective and unique taste in fashion it is defiantly in my humble opinion very different, fresh and new. I feel she will continue gaining attention in not only the Japanese fashion scene and industry but eventually internationally as well, it is only a matter of time.
