Sustainable ME Project Final Post

It’s the end of the semester and this is sadly my last post of my Sustainable ME project but it is definitely not the last of my sustainable journey and lifestyle. This semester I learned a lot about sustainability and living green and that every little thing I can do to reduce the environmental footprint I leave behind on the world makes a huge difference, not just in the short term but in the long term future as well.

By living a sustainable lifestyle I definitely changed and for the better and taking away all the things I learned from this project is something I will use for the rest of my life. I learned a lot about recycling and how to do it properly and I learned a lot about the things we throw away mindlessly and how they can really affect our environment in a negative way in the long run.

My initial personal commitment was to up-cycle,reuse, reduce and recycle something every week and I think stuck to that commitment and goal very well. I was able to reuse, reduce, & recycle something every week and it felt really good that I was helping the environment and helping myself. I do admit with regret that I did not get to post more about up-cycling on my Sustainable ME Project my previous post was just a mere glimpse of the up-cycling that I plan to do more of in the near future. For the future I plan to stick to this sustainable lifestyle and find more ways that I can help the environment everyday! I also plan to look into up-cycling things more and possibly selling the things I come up with on etsy. A big thanks to everyone who followed me on my sustainable journey! I hope that in the future I will still continue to be on the sustainable path in order to make our world a better place for the future generations to come.

Personal Buying Journal Evaluation

Personal Buying Journal Evaluation

Why do we make purchases and what gets us to purchase a particular product? It’s a question many of us don’t think about all too often when we are shopping. Some people shop for fun, as a past time and as a hobby while some people buy things they know they will need and use. For whatever the purpose shopping and buying things is an activity people participate in regularly. Think about all the things you buy during a week from putting gas in your car to getting something to eat at a fast food joint or going out to your favorite store at the mall and buying an article of clothing.  It seems every day we as consumers are making purchases of some sort. The purpose of this paper is to examine the why and how of why we make purchases as consumers and what goes in the decision making process of when we make a purchase. I as a consumer have written journal entries for the last eight weeks on exactly that that is the purchases I have made in the last eight weeks and why I bought them for what reasons and what feelings were involved. But to get a better understanding from my journals I have compiled them into a paper and narrowed my examination to four products.

Purchase 1 (Army Camo Jacket from Goodwill)

My first purchase I want to discuss is the Army green camo jacket I purchased from Goodwill. For this particular purchase I wanted it was hard to find anywhere else besides the thrift store so I didn’t consider many alternatives. The reason I wanted this item was because I had seen some similar outfits being worn by some of my favorite style bloggers on the internet both on YouTube and from various fashion blogs using an army green camo jacket. I wanted to achieve the same look for the Fall season because I like the way it looked cohesively and wanted the same look as I and seen on others before. I considered buying the camouflage jacket brand new but I had tried a few regular department stores and the prices seemed overpriced and it was not exactly what I was looking for the camouflage jacket. I wanted to get was a loose and baggy utilitarian looking jacket. The ones I had seen in stores were more fitted and feminine than what I was going for. So I tried thrifting these pieces like I had seen other bloggers post about.

Because I had decided to go to Goodwill to search for this  item I wasn’t looking for a particular brand but more of a particular style that I had in mind and at a much cheaper price than what I could find at a chain of retail store. The most important product attribute for me in this purchase was did the style of the piece adhere to what I had in mind in order to achieve the look I wanted and were the prices reasonable. My motivation for buying the camo jacket was defiantly to improve myself style and self concept because I love fashion and I love wearing unique and trendy pieces. I would buy this product again if I could find it again and if something happened to the item I had bought previously because the price of the camo jacket was reasonable. I only spent a fraction of what I would have if I had bought it new at a department store.

Purchase 2 (Bowler hat from Ebay)

The second item I purchased was a new hat online from Ebay. The reason I wanted this particular item was because I was looking for it specifically for the fall season, it was not a specific brand. I had tried many stores but they didn’t have the style and the fit I wanted so I looked online for it on Ebay and was able to find it on Ebay. I did consider alternatives from stores like Forever 21 and H&M but as I said before the fit of the hats and style they had were not what I was looking for. The important attributes I was looking for were if it fit my head right and if it was the style and shape I wanted. The identified benefits were important for me because I wanted to achieve a certain look I had seen celebrities and other girls sporting online. I guess the reason I wanted to have these attributes in the hat is to boost my self-concept, wanting to be on trend and on fashion. I would most certainly buy the product again if I was in need of the same type of hat the bowler derby hat was not a particular brand but I would defiantly buy the product again.

Purchase 3 (Pleather hot pants from Forever 21)

The third purchase I made were pleather hot pants because I had wanted to buy some pleather shorts for awhile now and had been thinking about purchasing a pair since last fall. I considered many alternatives for my shorts but since I was mostly interested in them having that leather look which I wanted. The attributes were really seeking were good quality and sturdy pleather material shorts, the right style and if they fit well. I did look at several pairs that Forever 21 had from button up ones, cuffed ones & zip front ones. I chose a back zipper pleather hot pant that I thought fit really well and were at a good price and also had the look I was going for. The attributes I was looking for were obviously the style, the fit, and the quality. I bought the leather shorts because they are an on trend item for this season and I had been seeing the look on people for awhile. I wanted the shorts as a sort of role fulfillment of fitting in amongst the fashion crowd as well as improving upon m self concept.

Purchase 4 (Jeffrey Campbell Tardy wedges from Ebay)

My last and biggest purchase from the last eight weeks would have to be the Jeffery Campbell Tardy wedge shoes I won on EBay. I was looking for the Tardy by Jeffery Campbell in Brick Red boots for awhile like almost two years because I liked the look and style of them. I had also seen many fashion bloggers and youtubers who absolutely raved about this shoe and I did extensive research before I decided to commit to buying them. I decided this year would be the year I would buy them except that they were completely sold out online everywhere in the color and size I wanted and they were not back in stock any time soon according to the websites. That being said I looked to eBay and was able to find a auction bid for a twice worn pair starting at a bid of $85.00 and won them for $100.00 a great deal considering they usually retail for $200.00 .The product attributes I was interested in were that the look and style of the shoes had had to be what I wanted and expected from research and reviews. My motivation for purchasing them was self-concept and self-image as well as self-esteem this recent purchase made me feel good and fashionable and on trend. Would I purchase this product again and the answer is a solid yes, the quality and fit of this brand of shoe is worth the price in my opinion. I am considering buying more Jeffery Campbell shoes and another pair of Tardy boots in another color, so yes since the product is comfortable and stylish and so far durable and sturdy I would definitely buy this product again.

Based on the four purchases I made I came to the conclusion that my decision making process as a consumer has a lot to do with my internal factors as in my self-concept and self image. I made my decisions on the purchases I made on the feelings I think they would evoke in me. Although the majority of my purchases were based off my internal feelings and factors I also was influenced by outside external factors like seeing my favorite fashion bloggers and other girls sporting the same purchases and the same styles’. But when it came down to it each purchase I made I really thought about how it would look on me and why I wanted to buy that particular purchase and how it would improve my self-concept and image. I understood the need and recognition on why I wanted each of the products I bought and I did to a certain extent do research and search for alternatives before I made my purchases. So far and surprisingly I have not experienced cognitive dissonance for any of the purchases I mentioned in this paper. I think the decision making process  and the attributes and benefits consumers are looking for will vary from person to person based on what they are buying but the overall framework and steps leading up to making a purchase is the same especially when you first buy something. Consumers recognize they need an item or to solve a problem, they do research on a product be it online or in store or from friends and family or on their own. They look at alternatives when they search and seek out the purchase and evaluate them and then they make their purchases. Post-purchase evaluations usually happen after that and when and if a consumers expectations aren’t met and they experience cognitive dissonance they will turn to a different product and decision making process starts over again for them.

Marketing implications

Two marketing implications discovered during the investigation were that I base my purchases a lot on how I view myself and how I want others to view me and if I see an item enough on others I’ll want to have it for myself as well. I think a marketer could reach me and deliver an effective and efficient message to me to buy their products by promoting the product to me visually be it through commercials or via social media and the internet. I’m a visual person when I see something enough times I take note of it and notice it every time I see it. If a marketer promoted extensively to me through visual ad campaigns that grabbed my attention it  would puts it into my mind that this is what is hot and trendy and on fashion at the time so I would be more inclined to buy the product they are pushing. By appealing to me visually as well they can appeal to my need to want to improve upon my self-concept and self-image by making product purchases. I think these implications are common not just for me as a consumer but others as well I think by appealing to the consumer’s self concept needs Marketers could expand their market to which the product they want to sell is targeted.

Reuse,Recycle and Upcycle.

Last week I visited my brother who lives out in the country a little bit over an hour out of Dallas and noticed he had a lot of bullet case shells lying around from shooting, since he lives out in the country there actually isn’t a place close enough to him to recycle the bullet case shells. I asked him what they were made of and he had no clue, I assumed they had to be made of some metal aluminum or bronze that could be melted down and used again. So I asked him for his spent bullet cases and I had intended to take them off his hands to recycle them at a place that accepted spent ammunition when I got back home but decided maybe I could put them to good use.

In general, the only explosive-related material that can be recycled is bullet casings, which can be reloaded and used again (Explosives Recycling and Disposal – Earth911.com, (n.d.) but most people don’t reload ammunition themselves and bullet cases usually end up in the landfill. But I did some research and found that there is a significant market for used bullet shell casings. In fact, the United States Marine Corps offers some of their bullet shell casings to recyclers with tens to hundreds of thousands of pounds being offered to bidders at their Hawaii base alone. In 2009 they offered approximately 200,000 pounds and in 2011 they offered approximately 60,000 pounds – and that is just from 1 base (Recycling Your Bullet Shell Casings in Las Vegas, n.d.). Also by recycling bullet shell casings it will keep plenty of unnecessary waste out of landfills and reduce the environmental consequences of firing ranges and bullets in general. Imagine if the US Marine Corps simply threw away all of its bullet shell casings – there would have been 200,000 extra pounds of waste disposed of in Hawaii alone in 1 year! By recycling them, you can make your local environment just a little bit greener (Recycling Your Bullet Shell Casings in Las Vegas, n.d.).

But instead of recycling them which is a good idea if you can’t find any use for them I decided to give them a new use. Christmas is coming up and I decided I could be a little crafty with making gifts this year with the bullet case shells I got and with things I had lying around the house that I was going to throw away. I took an old Vinyl sunglasses case I had and some tear drop plastic jewels I had from an old broken lamp and a part from a broken hair clip to make an up-cycled clutch as a gift.

Below is a picture of what I made.

A Halloween good deed and deal at Chipotle!!!

booritothumb.jpg

This past week on Halloween Chipotle had an awesome special if you came dressed in your Halloween costume you got a $2 burrito of your choice (or burrito bowl, salad, tacos etc.) and the best part is that Chipotle would donate up to a million bucks of it’s Halloween Day proceeds to The Chipotle Cultivate Foundation, a nonprofit organization that has deep roots in the sustainable food movement, helping to create a healthier food supply and more awareness of food-related issues (Cleaver, 2012). How great is that a $2 burrito and you get to contribute to a very good cause that gets awareness out and helps a non profit organization in the the sustainable food movement path.

That being said I gathered a bunch of my friends told them to get decked out for Halloween and we went to Chipotle it was a good way to start Halloween night and we felt good about helping a good cause. Also if you didn’t already know Chipotle is a very environmentally friendly chain of restaurants if you check out their website for more information they are dedicated to FWI (Food with Integrity).

A few of the statements Chipotle provides on their website:

“We’re working closely with farmers and ranchers to ensure their operations create as small an impact as possible on the environment, so it’s also important we do what we can to make each Chipotle restaurant as green as we can get it.”

“Industrial ranching and factory farming produce tons of waste while depleting the soil of nutrients. These seem like bad things to us. So we work hard to source our ingredients in ways that protect this little planet of ours.”

“The best way to treat animals with dignity and respect is to allow them to display their natural tendencies. When sourcing meat, we work hard to find farmers and ranchers who are doing things the right way.”

“We have a long way to go to get things where we want them, but with the nation’s first ever Platinum LEED certified restaurant under our belts, we’re starting to figure this stuff out a little.”

They also use organic, family farmed and local ingredients as well as have sustainable designed restaurants all across the country. Chipotle is on the right path with their sustainable efforts, practices and values as a fast-food chain and are helping to contribute to saving and protecting our planet and it’s environment.

Saving energy and saving gas.

This past weekend I went out and got more CFL light bulbs to replace the ones around my house not just my room to cut down on some electricity. Replacing one regular light bulb with an approved compact fluorescent light bulb can save consumers $30 in energy costs over the life of the bulb (Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs – Save Energy, Money and the Environment with Compact Fluorescent Light Bulbs., n.d.). I also took the DART (Dallas Area Rapid Transit)  train for the first time with a friend to commute to Dallas for a Halloween Block party that was going on on Saturday night  as well as used it on a trip on Sunday for the opening of the new Klyde Warren Park in Dallas, this way I saved gas and did not pollute the environment and the air with my cars pollution for a weekend of fun. I think Dallas is such a  populated city that so many cars traveling back and forth for towards their destinations creates so much smoke and smog in the environment especially on the weekend when people are trying to go to the city for fun that it’s a good idea to take the DART train so not as many people are using their vehicles and wasting so much gas and creating to much pollution. I think using the DART is a lot like the idea of  car pooling on a bigger scale and it helps so  that we don’t use up so much of our non-renewable resources left in the world.

Sustainable natural hairspray vs. Aerosol hairspray.

Last Sustainable me post I talked about using coconut oil for my hair and finding an alternative to aerosol cans of hairspray. This week I picked up an alternative hairspray in a non-aerosol can but before I get to that let’s look at a brief history of aerosol cans of hairspray and other products and why they are still considered bad for our environment.

  • First invented in the 1920s by U.S. Department of Agriculture scientists to pressurize insect spray, American soldiers eventually used the technology to help ward off Malaria in the South Pacific during World War II. The aerosol spray cans today, while much smaller and more refined, are direct descendents of those original military grade clunkers. Use of the cans for consumer applications took off during the ensuing decades, until the mid-1970s when ozone depletion first came to the public’s attention.
  • Consumer aerosol products made in the U.S. have not contained ozone-depleting chemicals – also known as chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) – since the late 1970s, first because companies voluntary eliminated them, and later because of federal regulations.
  • They still contain hydrocarbons and/or compressed gases notorious for their contribution to global warming. Every time you hit the button, then, you are raising your carbon footprint, albeit ever so slightly.(Are Aerosols Still Bad For The Ozone Layer?, 2008)

I will admit until recently I thought aerosol cans of hairsprays were good to use now  because of the elimination of CFCs but since starting this sustainable path to a more sustainable life and doing research I wanted to find an alternative to using aerosol hairspray. I searched the internet on a good alternative and found Suave Extra Hold Shaping & Finishing Spray who’s parent company Unilever, relies on a sustainable agriculture program. I also plan to reuse the plastic bottle after I finish using so far it’s been a good alternative to intense and toxic aerosol hairspray in a can I had used before.

Finding sustainable alternatives to hair care products.

I’m a little late on this post with the change of weather I’d been sick for the past two days. Anyways this weekend I recently bleached my hair and I have naturally un-dyed stick straight black hair,as you can imagine the bleaching did a number on my hair and as I was looking through my hair products to see what I could do to get my hair healthy again.Looking though the products I had from serums, and sprays, shampoos I realized what I use to put into my hair to get it smooth and un-frizzy didn’t contain the most natural or eco-friendly ingredients. So I took to the internet and found a good solution for my hair and even my skin coconut oil! I picked up this brand of Coconut oil at Sprouts to use as a deep conditioning hair treatment to use every week to get my hair healthy again,it all natural and it comes in a glass jar I intend to reuse afterwards when I go through it all. Coconut has a  lot of good properties and can be used for a variety of things. Now I’m looking into all natural and organic soaps and shampoos as well as finding a non-aerosol hairspray which won’t be hazardous to our environment hopefully I can find a great alternative to aerosol cans of hair spray this week. Will keep you updated.

Reusing,recycling,reducing, and regrowing…..

This is actually something I’ve been doing for awhile that I learned from my sister and that’s regrowing green onions. I’ll be the first to say I’m no good in gardening and I don’t have a green thumb but regrowing green onions is pretty simple and all you need is a couple of green onions from the store, water, a glass container or cup even an old plastic water bottle and some water also a window that gets good sunlight. Just simply wash out your container really well, pour water into it about half way and stick your green onions in it store the container by the window where it’ll get sunlight and be able to grow. Snip whatever you need to use for cooking when needed and make sure the water is changed every now and then and wash the stems every 3 days from when you start growing your green onions and they should grow, make sure they get plenty of sunlight as well. This is a good way on kind of starting on growing your own food and a good way to use glass containers you may have lying around. Did you know glass bottles are bad for the environment when simply tossed away, whether into the trash or by littering. A single glass container can take almost a million years to fully break down. Recycling, reusing or up-cycling these glass containers takes these bottles away from the Earth and puts them back to use (“How Does Glass Recycling Effect the Environment?”, n.d.)

Below is a picture of mine.

and below that is a picture of  an example from Pinterest.

Since my commitent for this sustainable me project was to also not just reuse, recycle and reduce but also upcycle I’ve found other purposes for old glass jars people usually toss out when they’re finished.I’ve used various glass jars from spaghetti sauce to salsa to store beads, paint, glitter, buttons, pretty much anything you can think of. Remember you can always find some use for glass jars before you recycle them and that way you can get your moneys worth from it too.
